BioSample DRAFT Profile

Version: 0.1-DRAFT (12 November 2019)

A bioschema's profile describing a biological sample.

If you spot any errors or omissions with this type, please file an issue in our GitHub.

The following people have been involved in the creation of this specification document. They are all members of the Samples group.

Group Leader(s)
Other team members hierarchy

This Profile fits into the hierarchy as follows:

Thing > BioChemEntity

A biological material entity that is representative of a whole. Comments: Typically samples are intended to be representative of the whole or aspects thereof. Examples of samples include biomedical samples (blood, urine) and plant specimens held at herbaria.

Key to specification table properties where the Expected Types have been changed, or new (i.e., Bioschemas created) properties/types are green. properties/types are red.

Pending properties/types are blue.

External (i.e., from 3rd party ontology) properties/types are black.

CD = Cardinality

Property Expected Type Description CD Controlled Vocabulary Example
Marginality: Minimum.
description Text

A description of the item.

identifier PropertyValue or Text or URL

The identifier property represents any kind of identifier for any kind of Thing, such as ISBNs, GTIN codes, UUIDs etc. provides dedicated properties for representing many of these, either as textual strings or as URL (URI) links. See background notes for more details.

name Text

The name of the item.

url URL

URL of the item.

Marginality: Optional.
additionalProperty PropertyValue

A property-value pair representing an additional characteristics of the entitity, e.g. a product feature or another characteristic for which there is no matching property in Note: Publishers should be aware that applications designed to use specific properties (e.g.,,, …) will typically expect such data to be provided using those properties, rather than using the generic property/value mechanism.

associatedDisease MedicalCondition or PropertyValue or URL

Disease associated to this BioChemEntity. Such a disease can be a MedicalCondition or a URL. If you want to add an evidence supporting the association, please use PropertyValue.

bioChemInteraction BioChemEntity

A BioChemEntity that is know to interact with this item.

bioChemSimilarity BioChemEntity

A similar molecular entity, e.g., obtained by fingerprint similarity algorithm.

biogicalRole DefinedTerm

A role played by the molecular entity within a biological context.

collector Organization or Person

The Person or Organization who collected the Sample.

custodian Organization or Person

The Person or Organization who is responsible for the Sample.

dateCreated Date or DateTime

The date on which the CreativeWork was created or the item was added to a DataFeed.

gender GenderType or Text

Gender of the person. While and may be used, text strings are also acceptable for people who do not identify as a binary gender

hasBioChemEntityPart BioChemEntity

Indicates a BioChemEntity that (in some sense) has this BioChemEntity as a part. Inverse property:isPartOfBioChemEntity

hasMolecularFunction DefinedTerm or PropertyValue or URL

Molecular function performed by this BioChemEntity; please use PropertyValue if you want to include any evidence.

hasRepresentation PropertyValue or Text or URL

A common representation such as a protein sequence or chemical structure for this entity. For images use

image ImageObject or URL

An image of the item. This can be a URL or a fully described ImageObject.

isControl Boolean

Indicates whether the sample is being used as a normal control, may be in combination with another sample.

isEncodedByBioChemEntity Gene

Another BioChemEntity encoding this one. Inverse property:encodesBioChemEntity.

Subcellular location where this BioChemEntity is located; please use PropertyValue if you want to include any evidence.

isPartOfBioChemEntity BioChemEntity

Indicates a BioChemEntity that is (in some sense) a part of this BioChemEntity. Inverse property:hasBioChemEntityPart

itemLocation Place or PostalAddress or Text

Current location of the item.

locationCreated Place

The location where the CreativeWork was created, which may not be the same as the location depicted in the CreativeWork.

sameAs URL

URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item’s identity. E.g. the URL of the item’s Wikipedia page, Wikidata entry, or official website.

samplingAge Integer

The age of the object when the Sample was created.
